Floor Plan Design and Preparation
If you fail to plan you plan to fail. A plan will help you avoid pitfalls like spending too much or buying the wrong items. The essentials that you will want to have to start are a floor plan and a budget. A floor plan can be as simple as a sketch that was drawn by hand or a print of a room that you would like to copy. There are many room designs both online and off. Make sure that you are taking notes of great rooms that you see. If you see something in your notes worthy of changing your plan, then go ahead and do it. Now budget those items that you are interested in and try hard not to go over it. Unfortunately for hobbyists miniatures can get a little expensive. And if you can't buy the furniture piece yet, save up until you can.
An Addition that can make a Big Difference
Everyone likes to tweak there dollhouses from time to time. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. I simply created a floor board to use for the trim around the floor of the dollhouse. You can buy many types of dollhouse trim through stores but what I found to be the cheapest and easiest is purchasing a long thin flat piece of balsa wood. Simply paint it the color of your dollhouse and attach it to the foot of your walls. I was most impressed to not see any more tiny cracks between the wall and the flooring due to the trim covering it up. The wallpaper walls were also trimmed and I was really happy to see that it prevented fraying due to covering the edges. This discovery truly was a small one, but I believe that it really added to my dollhouse.
Fabrics and Cloth
If you like detail, craft, and design then dollhouse design is a great opportunity to grow your talents. The shear amount of detail can be both overwhelming and exiting. One example is fabrics within a dollhouse. The bedroom is an excellent demonstration of detail and the breadth of items that you can create. You can coordinate the sheets, mattresses, curtains, pillows, and even a throw blanket. Next is the dinning room where you can have your own napkins, dinning room table covers, seat covers, etc. From there we move to the bathroom where you can create your own shower curtains, toilet seat covers, and more. As I stated before, it is endless, so enjoy the possibilities!
