Medical Coverage For Everyone?

A portion of the new health care reform takes place, starting in 2012 and ending about 2020. This bill is supposed to cover over 30 million people who currently do not have health insurance. Sounds too good to be true? It probably is too good to be true. Every state has until January 1, 2015 to set up insurance exchanges offering people insurance.

There are so many variables in this bill that the politicians are having a hard time answering questions as they simply do not have the answers. Starting in 2014 everyone must purchase private insurance, purchase insurance through their employer or buy insurance through one's state insurance exchange. It is still the individuals choice, however the government has now added a stiff penalty if they do not want to pay for insurance. They will be fined $695.00 per year. So, the bottom line is buy health insurance or pay a fine.

The timing for these changes couldn't be worse. No one really sees promising improvements in the economy, which could lead to financial ruin for the U.S. Many people feel we are already at that door. November 2011 numbers report a record number of people jobless because of business failures or cut backs.

In addition most of these people have lost their homes. Many have run out of unemployment benefits and are turning to food banks to feed their families. Thousands of people every day turn to their state for financial help for energy bills that they cannot pay. If they are able to hold onto their homes, their energy bills are brining them down.

An employer who has 50 or more employees must offer health insurance their workers. If they do not they will have to pay $2,000 a year for every employee. Insurance rates will go according to the Federal Poverty Level. The government says that over ten years the cost of this plan will be over 950 billion dollars. This plan is expected to reduce the deficit by over 140 billion dollars the first ten years, and 1.2 trillion dollars within the second 10 years.

How can the millions of Americans pay for health insurance or pay a fine of $700 each year if they cannot even find a job to feed their family? The neighborhood food bank has all but replaced the job market as the only hope some of these people have to feed themselves or their family. Freedom to choose means absolutely nothing, if there are no choices to choose from, while you are being forced to buy something you cannot afford. Who really wins in this situation?
