Meditating With A Mantra

Aum is the stereotypical sound of Buddhist monks in meditation. Aum does not have a literal translation, but when used in meditation it is very powerful in its capacity to quiet your mind and connect you with your Essence or Inner Spirit.

Both written words and the sounds they make, have a specific energy - especially when paired with intent. So a mantra is 'any' word or phrase used as the focal point of a meditation, and has the power to catalyze a shift into deeper, more peaceful states of awareness.

Mantras can be chanted aloud, or repeated silently in the mind.

The power of using a mantra comes from letting go of out-worldly connection and allowing your attention to dive into the deeper realms of awareness. So, you focus on the mantra to create peace in your mind, but staying focused on it is not the aim. If you are concentrating too hard to stay focused, you are keeping your attention from descending into the deeper realms. You should aim to repeat the mantra with minimal effort, and give your mind the opportunity to wander. If it wanders off-track and connects you to your day-to-day, gently guide your awareness back to the mantra.

It is important to resist trying to make something happen. The mantra will allow natural progress if given time as you will shift into deeper, more peaceful states of awareness.

Meditation increases the flow of energy to the brain and clears away both physical and emotional toxic build-up. It is recommended to start with 10 minute meditations for a month or so, before moving to 20 minutes, so your body can better handle any detoxification. Drinking extra filtered water is also advised after meditation to dilute this chemical release.

Using a mantra in meditation can accelerate your spiritual growth, as it can assist reaching a state of relaxation and self-awareness.
