Meditation Techniques For Beginners
The goal of meditation is to arrive at a state of complete relaxation. To accomplish this goal you'll need to control both the mind and the body slowing the thoughts and movements through control. Contrary to popular belief meditation is not about losing control of the mind and body but rather about gaining total control over it. Meditation Starts with Breathing Controlled breathing is the first step towards total relaxation. It is essential to have controlled rhythmic breathing to reach a meditative state. The act of breathing itself acts as a meditative score to help you achieve relaxation. Begin by thinking about controlling your breathing. The goal is to breathe in a rhythmic pattern where breathing in and breathing out are the same length. Take long slow deliberate breaths. Breathe in from the diaphragm. This deep breathing is helpful for the circulation of blood throughout the body and mind. Be sure to keep your breathing controlled and steady. The breaths should be repetitive in feel and in sound. When you first start practicing meditative breathing you'll have to concentrate on making it happen, however once you've mastered it the breathing will come easily. Get Relaxed In order to reach a meditative state you'll need to be comfortable physically. Choose a room that will have no distractions. Even the sound of a phone or television in another room can disturb the process. The room should be a comfortable temperature - neither too warm or too cold. The lighting should be subtle. There should be nothing in the room that could act as a distraction. Next you'll need to find a comfortable pose. Some people like to lie down on the floor when they meditate while others like to sit with legs crossed. The best position is one that works best for you. You should be able to stay in the position comfortably for at least 20 minutes. It is important that you won't think about your surroundings or your position while you meditate. Begin Meditation Meditation begins by simply removing any thoughts from your head. This is easier said than done. It will take some practice to achieve the result you want. One way to learn to meditate is through the use of guided meditations. Guided meditations will take you through the entire meditation process from start to end. You can learn to meditate without using guided meditations if you choose. One easy way to meditate is to guide yourself through the meditative process. Sit or lie comfortably before you begin. Start your rhythmic breathing to begin. Then think about each of the areas of your body and relax them one by one. Concentrate on first your head, your neck, your shoulders, your arms, your hands, etc. Continue in this way slowly working your way down your entire body until your whole body is totally relaxed. You're Meditating Now you're meditating. Meditation isn't going into some hypnotic state. Instead it is simply clearing your mind totally from extraneous thoughts. You'll find that the process is difficult at first but don't worry, it will soon become much easier to do. Keep focused on your breathing and your body and you'll soon achieve the effect you desire. The more you practice meditation the easier it will be to achieve. The state of relaxation is a necessary process to rest both the mind and the body. These periods of relaxation work to both rest and recharge the system to make it much more productive in the future.
