Menopause And Mood Swings In Women

Menopause is definitely a difficult period for most women to go through but when it comes to mood swings with women during menopause it also becomes difficult for those around them. Some women do not want to admit that their having mood swings during menopause and that these mood swings are due to different circumstances that are brought on by menopause.

Medical surveys have found that about 8 of women that are going through menopause also experience mood swings which are brought on by changes in a women’s hormone levels. The change in the levels of a woman’s estrogen definitely plays a big part in mood swings especially since estrogen plays a role in how neurotransmitters which are chemicals that affect the operation of the brain and nerve functions. When a woman falls into this category they should see their doctor for hormone therapy to help smooth out the mood roller coaster.

Another situation that affects mood swings during menopause is when a woman has had their ovaries removed or a woman’s ovaries have ceased to function due to medical treatment and both these scenarios impact the levels of estrogen in a woman. When a situation like this occurs and the levels of estrogen go from normal to low levels the effect of neurotransmitters can be quite dramatic which leads to serious mood problems and instability.

As well women who have a lifestyle that results in cutting their sleep time short or who experience either hot flashes or night sweats are more than likely to have mood problems due to sleep deprivation. As women age and once past the age of forty are more than likely to either have sleep disturbance or a sleep disorder to affect changes in their mood and not in a good way. The following are different situations that a woman may be suffering from sleep deprivation.

• A woman wakes up at night with night sweats that may be mild but restrict a woman from getting the sleep that she badly needs. If a woman is never getting into deep sleep they may be suffering sleep deprivation.

• If a woman gets less than seven hours sleep per night they will more than likely be less productive on the job and also have problems with memory and concentration. Getting the proper sleep a woman may boost their effectiveness in ways that will amaze them.

• A woman may wake up in the middle of the night thinking about problems and stress like this is a major reason for a woman having sleep loss. Finding ways to fall back asleep may end up resulting that a woman has more emotional stability to cope with their changes in life.

• If a woman has a snoring problem this may be a sign of sleep apnea and if a woman is tired during the day, it is more than likely time for a sleep study to see if a woman needs treatment. Both age and weight may be a cause of sleep apnea as well and midlife is a common time to develop this condition.

Depression is well another reason for mood swings during menopause and if a woman has a history of depression, they should seek medical help for this condition. A woman will definitely need to seek help if they have had to use antidepressants in the past for depression as they definitely need not to experience another bout of depression during menopause.

There are as well other life circumstances that may affect mood swings during menopause and these different situations may affect a woman to have mood swings. One situation is children hitting their teens and this situation affect the whole household as everyone struggles to manage the mood and behavior changes of their bodies. Other life circumstances that may affect a woman’s mood swings are looking after aging parents, instability in a marriage and also work stress which may be caused by accepting more responsibility on the job.

Definitely if a woman is experiencing any mood swing during menopause they should take action to have a better mood. A woman should first figure out why their mood is slipping and whether if it is hormones or life stress and look for treatment to resolve the issue. Making lifestyle changes like exercising, earlier bedtime, talking about it and eliminating stimulants like coffee also help to alleviate mood swings. As well a woman should get treatment from a doctor as soon as she realizes she has mood swings as a woman will lessen the impact on their lives due to their mood swings.

In the end if a woman looks after herself properly during menopause especially when it comes to mood swings, she will definitely make life easier not only for herself but as well as those around her especially their husbands.
