Mental Toughness With Self Defence

Training in self defense and martial arts can challenge you as a person. The training can help develop your skills and help to develop you as a person. It is how you face the challenges in your training and your ability to master them that will see you succeed. If you are mentally tough you will achieve greater results not only in your training, but also in a street situation as well.

In many different areas research suggests that being mentally tough may have more to do with beating an opponent than strength or power. Mental toughness gives you the ability to stay in control under pressure, remain determined and maintain your confidence.

Mental toughness will enable you to cope better with the demands of training, and make you more focused. It gives you a winning edge over your opponent.

So how do we develop your mental toughness ?

First we need to recognise some of the main characteristic of mentally tough people. These are confidence, focus, motivation, composure, courage.

In this article we will be looking at the first aspect – confidence. Having a belief in yourself will improve your confidence and your mental toughness. If you believe you can succeed you will deal much better with obstacles that cross your path.

Our beliefs are judgements about ourselves, others and the world around us. They are what we use to make sense of what goes on around us. Beliefs are generalisations about what causes certain things to happen and can affect our behaviour.

Our beliefs come from many sources. The way we were brought up, significant events that happened in our lives, repetitive experiences, important people and so on, will all have an impact on our beliefs.

These beliefs can either limit us or help us. Think of it this way - what do believe ?

“To achieve anything you have to work hard.” or do you believe “To achieve anything requires a certain amount of luck and help” ?

It is highly unlikely you would agree with both statements, and it could be the case that you agree with neither and have your own beliefs about achievement. So, our beliefs act as very powerful influences on our perception of the world and ultimately can affect our mental toughness.

We need ways to that are simple and effective to change any limiting beliefs you may have about yourself. These and the other areas for developing mental toughness are trained in our Black Belt Self Defence Course.
