Take medicines if alterations in lifestyle do not work or there is an urgent need to reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Depending upon the component of cholesterol required to be reduced- Cholesterol, LDL cholesterol or Triglyceride- these medicines are divided into several varieties.
If your LDL levels are high, then you would medications such as statin and Vitamin B sometimes called Niacin. However, make sure that you do not overdose Niacin as it may cause severe side effects. You must only consume a quantity as advised by your GP. The same is applicable for other cholesterol lowering medications as well as an overdose of any medicine can have side effects.
In order to lower LDL cholesterol medications such as Statins and Vitamin B ( niacin ) can be consumed. A word of caution though! Do not over-consume Vitamin B. It may cause some serious side-effects. Follow the doctor's instructions on its consumption pattern. Similarly, take care while taking other cholesterol-lowering medications. They too might have some side-effects.
You can always increase your HDL levels with the help of monosaturated oils such as olive oil and Vitamin B rich foods. But make sure that you do not over consume vitamin B as this may have serious side effects. You should also cut down on your alcohol intake to increase HDL.
