If you are considering headed "south of the border" for your next vacation, you have many potential destinations. Before you book your trip, make sure it is near the attractions you really want to see. These are some of the top tourist attractions in Mexico.

The Beaches

Mexico has over 9000 km of coastline, and much of this is sandy beaches that are perfect for tourists. Some of the world's most beautiful beaches are found on the coast of Mexico, so those who love the sun, sand, and surf flock to Mexico all year round. Areas like Cancun, Acapulco, and Los Cabos have some of the most famous beaches in the entire world. Many of the coastal areas have famous dive sites as well.

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza is a Mayan archaeological site in the Yucatan Peninsula that is one of the most popular destinations in world. It is classified as one of the seven wonders of the world, and it is one of the most complete archaeological sites in Mexico. Here visitors can explore the ruins of an entire Mayan city, one that was the political center of the empire.

Teotihaucan

Teotihaucan, the "City of the Gods" sits just 25 miles from Mexico City. This huge archaeological site has some of the largest pyramids of pre-Columbian Mexico. Archaeologists believe this city was inhabited around 200 B.C. Much of its history remains a mystery, as the ancient civilization that lived there was gone by the time of the Aztecs.

Copper Canyon Railway

The 13-hour trip on the Copper Canyon railway is considered one of the most breathtaking train ride in the world. The railroad in and of itself is historic, as it took nearly 90 years to complete, and today riders can travel along the edge of mountains, across deep ravines, and through some of Mexico's most beautiful natural areas on the day-long ride. The train runs from the Pacific to Chihuahua, with several stops in between where riders can book accommodations.
