Mini-united Nations Comes To Downtown Fort Lauderdale

Although the real United Nations sits more than a thousand miles to the north, a casual passerby might not have been so sure while walking past the inlingua Language School (located at the corner of Broward Boulevard and Federal Highway in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida) during the summer of 2010. That’s because from June through August, more than 400 students from around the world came to study English abroad at inlingua’s Fort Lauderdale campus. The growing popularity of study abroad programs is well-illustrated by inlingua Fort Lauderdale, an international language school that helps students improve their English language skills while making new friends from different countries.

During the summer of 2010, hundreds of students came to Fort Lauderdale to study English through one of inlingua’s many popular conversational English courses (some of the language courses offered at inlingua’s Fort Lauderdale campus include conversational English, intensive English, business English and courses that combine conversational English with TOEFL and TOEIC preparation programs). According to inlingua Fort Lauderdale Center Director Ana Rocha, “the summer of 2010 was a great success for inlingua and more importantly, for our students. We had students come from over a dozen countries to study English abroad. While they were here, our language students improved their English fluency and understanding of American culture while having fun at the beach and other activities with new friends from different countries.” According to Rocha, some of the countries represented by inlingua’s students this summer included Spain, France, Italy, China, Turkey, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Colombia, the Netherlands, Russia, Germany, Austria—even Mongolia and Azerbaijan—to name just a few.

During their classes and activities (inlingua Fort Lauderdale offers daily and weekly activity packages that include sightseeing tours of major Florida attractions, recreational and sporting opportunities and the very popular Saturday excursions to Orlando-area theme parks), students got the chance to not only learn English, but also gain some skills in informal diplomacy. “Even though there are many cultural differences between students from different countries, all of our students really enjoyed the chance to learn English and appreciate new cultures and ideas from their new friends from around the world,” Rocha pointed out. She noted that many have already booked a spot in one of inlingua’s English courses for next summer, so it looks like the Mini-United Nations will be back in session at inlingua Fort Lauderdale during the summer of 2011.
