Mobile Phone Shopping Guide

Gone are the days when a mobile phone was just a portable telephone. Mobile phones nowadays are considered as much a fashion accessory as a humble telephone, and the importance of functionality has been surpassed by the importance of design. So in this world of mobile phone overload, how do you decide the right handset for you?

Appearance

There’s a wealth of variety within the mobile phone market these days – from sleek Apple iPhone designs to the free mobiles given away by network providers like Vodafone and Orange, it’s easy to find a look that speaks to your tastes. But don’t forget - looks aren’t the be-all and end-all- there are several other aspects to take into account to ensure that you’re getting a great mobile.

There are several basic designs out there – one is the ‘chocolate bar’ look, a basic one-piece phone with keypad exposed. Secondly there’s the flip-up design, and thirdly there’s the ‘slide’ handset. With these options, the keypad is hidden, so there’s far less of a chance of you damaging the unit or accidentally keying buttons while you’re on the go.

Practical features

There are two basic functions that we expect our phones to carry out - to make and receive calls and texts. A good battery life is required if your phone is to carry out these tasks efficiently. Having a phone that needs constant charging can be a nightmare. So when shopping for a mobile, check the average battery expectancy of the mobiles you’re looking at.

As a time-saving option, you might also consider a phone with predictive text – here your mobile phone predicts the words you are typing, entering them on your behalf.

Fun features

And now the fun part. Phones come with so many extra features nowadays and it can be hard not to be persuaded to buy a mobile that does everything but drive the kids to school. To avoid being charged the earth for a mobile, examine the options then decide what you’re REALLY going to put to use. A few options that now come as standard are:

Camera function – phone cameras have advanced so quickly over the last few years, with most mobiles now offering 8 megapixel capabilities, rivalling digital cameras. Really, 1 megapixel is the quality that’s needed to take shots detailed enough that they can be printed out at the standard photo size of 6”x4”.

Internet – if you use the internet a lot then this is a handy add-on for you. Internet access on your phone means you can browse the web and check and send emails while you’re out and about.

MP3 compatibility – if you spend a lot of time on the move – on the train, on the bus, or walking about town, then an MP3 option could make your day. This option will allow you to listen to all your favourite tunes on the go, without having to carry a separate personal stereo.
