Mobility Scooter Lifts: Buying Tips From A Physical Therapist

If you're searching for a wheelchair or scooter lift for your car or van, we'll skip over the wheelchair/scooter advice and get right down to the lift itself. As a licensed physical therapist, I can provide advice into this purchase and give some helpful hints. Below are 5 key factors when purchasing your wheelchair or scooter lift.

Price -- This one is obvious. Do you look for a used lift or go with a newer, safer model? Can you install the device on your own or will you need some assistance? Will you have to buy a new car or van because your old one just won't suffice? Look around at your options to get a good idea

Type of Lift -- You can purchase either an external Hitch Mounted type or an Inside Vehicle Lift. The Hitch models are usually much |less expensive|cheaper} however you are leaving the scooter/wheelchair outside of the car during transport and dealing with the potential weather and element issues with that. Internal models are more |costly|expensive} and take up space within the vehicle but give more comfort that your device is free from damage during transport.

Durability -- Is the lift made of steel? Iron? Other alloys? Don't forget that steel tends to rust easily while Stainless steel and aluminum will not in most cases. Do you need a heavy duty model due to being of larger stature?

Ability to Handle the Lift -- If you are the disabled person, are you able to physically handle the lift and its setup? Would it be easier to handle a larger hitch model than a smaller internal lift model? Don't ignore this important factor.
