The starting point to an enjoyable model railway, is a well thought-out plan. This is something you should definitely consider before you buy any components or start any construction. Assembling your railway is not just a matter of blindly connecting the tracks and hoping it will all come together once the final pieces have been connected.

Without a solid plan, you will almost certainly end up having to redo your layout several times over resulting in frustration and discouragement.

How Much Space Do You Have Available?

When planning a model railway, the first thing you need to look at is the amount of space you have available. Are you intending to create your railway in a large garage with an abundance of free space or are you restricted to a small corner of a workshop, or bedroom.

The reason space has such an impact on your layout is because this directly affects your choice of scale for your model railway and the type of themes you can choose to emulate.

The Amount Of Space Can Influence Your Theme Choice

Generally speaking, the ‘main line’ theme is hard to squeeze into small, tight spaces whereas the ‘industrial’, ‘branch line’ and ‘tramway’ themes will work well.

However, if the ‘main line’ theme is definitely the layout of your choice, and you really don’t want to consider an alternative, then the only way to achieve this is to scale down the size of your railway layout.

This brings me to one of the great benefits of model railroading: there is a selection of scales to choose from, ranging from large right down to miniature. Model railways have even been made to fit into small suitcases.

Each theme will have its own restrictions and here are examples of where this becomes obvious: in the curves of the track which may be too tight, the angles of the switches which could end up being too steep, and the siding which could be too short.

If you have the luxury of a larger space to work with, themes are not so much of a problem, whereas, when building a small layout, everything needs to be compressed.
