For example, choosing a snowy background is much harder because you have to get the lay of the land right in order to make it look authentic and realistic.

There are thousands of model railroad structures out there so choose the ones for your model wisely, even if it takes a few days longer to get hold of the one you want to begin with. You can include absolutely anything you want, as long as it fits so do not take your decision lightly!
