Modern Contraceptive Products
During the past 50 years, there have been significant strides made in the progress of the modern contraceptive with the advent of the birth control pill. The idea behind “The Pill” was to use a combination of different hormones to convince the female body that it was pregnant, when it was not, thus not allowing it to become pregnant through intercourse. And these pills worked exactly as advertised, though there were some side effects. Most notably, the first and second generation iterations of the birth control pill seriously inhibited the sex drive of the women who took them. But the side effects were generally minor, and never went much past the level of mild problems. Most of them were not seriously life threatening. However, now at the dawn of the 21st century, when pharmaceutical companies are introducing more and more products, there have been two major brands of contraceptive that come under criticism due to severe, life threatening side effects. The first is the oral contraceptive known as Yasmin. The second is the contraceptive ring sold under the trade name Nuvaring. What Nuvaring Is, And How It Works Nuvaring is a plastic ring that women insert into their vaginas once a month. It releases a series of hormones into the blood stream in extremely low doses, and it offers the benefit of never having to remember to take a cycle of pills or injections. It promises to clear up acne and is marketed by the manufacturer as an “insert and forget” form of effective birth control. The Side Effects of Nuvaring The problem for a portion of the women who use Nuvaring is that it comes with a wide variety of side effects. The Nuvaring side effects range from the mildly annoying (dizziness, itching and dry skin, pain in the arms and legs) to the painful and tolerable (headaches, sinus infections, vaginal infections, numbness and loss of vision). Then, there are the life threatening side effects, such as heart attacks, blood clots, strokes, severe vaginal bleeding, intestinal problems and severe allergic reactions. The Complications and Fatalities Brought About By Nuvaring Several women who have used the contraceptive device have died from the complications of heart problems and stroke brought about by the use of Nuvaring. Nuvaring and blood clots have led to fatalities in women who were young, had no family history of the disorder and were not at risk for it. Why Contemporary Contraception Is So Seemingly Dangerous Now What has many medical experts in disagreement is that it is simply not clear why these newer generations of birth control are increasing the risk of serious side effects. The science should be clear, but no one seems able to pin down why these side effects seem to keep getting more severe with each new generation of contraceptive.
