After all the chaos and preparation that goes into creating a good website, often times people forget about the simple rules of web design. The simple stuff such as text, navigation, links and graphics are vital to the success of a website. These are some key things to remember about each of the criteria.
Texts
Do not to let the background conflict with the text. A black background with white text does not only look tacky but it is nearly impossible to read. Nobody will read your web site if it’s becomes a chore. Text should be big enough so that it is easily read, but not too big making it look obnoxious. A 12-16 font size is recommended for the text body. Headlines can be larger but should not drive away attention from the actual article.
Links
It is important to link because linking to other sites will lead to more visits on your site. Still many people still break the design code when linking. The link colors need to coordinate with page colors. The links also should be underlined so they are instantly clear to the visitor
Graphics
If your web site is going to contain graphics, you have to do it right. When you use buttons remember not to make them too big. They also must flow with the concept of your website. Do not use animated graphics. They just look silly and most people consider them to be cheap useless marketing tools. People will judge your company financially, based upon website appearance. The use of animations is the dead give away of a low funded website and people like to work with companies they feel have money.
Navigation
The flow of your website is important to keeping visitors for a good period of time. Navigation should be consistent throughout the website. If your website is large you should consider adopting a site map or an index. Navigation buttons should also show visitors what they are looking at and provide a way of getting back.
These tips will help you design a better website, bringing in more customers and visitors, adding to more profit. It is advised to seek professional help when designing a website but having a general knowledge of what you want is suggested.
