Moscow Sights: The Tretyakov Gallery.

The Tretyakov Gallery is a world famous collection of Russian art which impresses and inspires Moscow visitors who are interested in art.

The gallery is situated on the south bank of the Moskva river, just opposite the Kremlin. The museum contains about 130,000 art pieces from early icons to modern paintings; all these are displayed in 62 rooms. The collection was started in 1856 by two brothers, textile businessmen Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov who later donated the whole museum to the state.

Without Tretyakov's broad and generous sponsorship of the arts many Russian artists would not have been able to achieve the artistic success that they did and the world of Russian art would be considerably diminished. The collection was aimed to the fulfillment of a historic assignment - that of patriotic and moral education of the people. Looking for extensiveness and diversity in the display of Russian graphic art, Pavel Tretyakov wanted the exceptional masters to be represented by works reflecting all the main stages in their artistic careers. From the late sixties the Tretyakov brothers started collecting canvases by painters of the first half of the 19th century, and the 18th century paintings.
The most famous works of art in the collection are The Theotokos of Vladimir, also known as Mother Of God Of Vladimir - one of the most honored Orthodox icons, an example of Eleusa Byzantine iconography; The Trinity by the great medieval icon painter Andrei Rublyov; Ilia Repin’s renowned and beloved realistic portraits; the famous and controversial Black Square by Malevich.
When you visit the museum do not forget to have a quick look around the Sculpture Park, located just around the back of the Tretyakov building. The park was originally started as a "Graveyard to Fallen Monuments" of the Soviet era. Today, however, there are very few remaining soviet statues and much of the park is devoted to sculptural works by contemporary Russian artists.

There is a lot more to see in Moscow, and the city is definitely worth visiting, even though the trip involves some preliminary preparation. For instance, you might need a visa to travel to Russia. You should allocate at least two weeks to have your Russian visa processed.
