Mosquitoes And You.
Unfortunately, there is no way to completely rid your yard of the parasites, especially if you live in a heavily wooded community. The ideal environment for mosquitoes is water and heat, particularly stagnant or standing pools of water. That is their breeding ground, and so wetter, more humid seasons make for more potent clouds of mosquitoes. Conversely, the drier your summer, the less likely those little beasts will infiltrate your yard. If you’re working in the yard try wearing lighter-colored clothing, and try working during the day versus at night. When it comes to repellants, any fogger will do the trick, available at any hardware store. For a more natural choice, there are some other options for you to try. Citronella candles are a popular choice, if for no other reason than they look nice. Castor bean plants (which also discourage moles) and catnip plants are also nice “smelly” choices for deterring mosquitoes. Certain bath oils, such as Avon’s “Skin So Soft” can also be used as a deterrent while you’re outside. Fact: only female mosquitoes bite. Another fact: mosquitoes look for animals to bite that have circulatory systems, or, in other words, emit carbon dioxide. Using this premise, you can find propane cylinders that generate CO2 gas, drawing the insects in where they are effectively zapped. One example is a machine called the Mosquito Magnet. It is a fairly expensive machine (think around $700) that can backfire if it happened to attract more mosquitoes than it can trap. Another fantastic option for a mosquito repellant is to install a bat house in one of your trees. Bats are mysterious creatures, and they have a reputation for being sneaky, evil and a nuisance. But consider this: one bat can consume 500-1000 mosquitoes in an hour…that’s between 4000-8000 a night! Bat houses are very easy to build and can be installed in inconspicuous places where no one would give it a second glance. And a big enough house can hold a large quantity of bats…mosquito repellant you’ll never hear, see or have to pay a penny for!
