Motels Had Their Moment In History

Motels had their moment in history midway through the twentieth century. This was when large cars with huge tanks unashamedly spread themselves and their carbon emissions over countries. More and more cars were made and people got in then and drove over roads that were not too crowded.

A short distance from main roads one could often find a few rooms, or cabins, each with its parking spot directly outside. With minimal administration one could book in and be private in a room with one's car immediately outside. What one needed could be removed from the car, a good stretch on a bed could provide one with required rest and then one could be on the road again the next morning.

Families traveling together found such establishments convenient. Children and parents, cooped up together all day could escape to different cabins knowing that they were safely close at hand. There were seldom corridors or stairways. The atmosphere was, as the name implies, half of the road and half of an hotel. It was neither too formal nor of a camping quality but somewhere in between.

The phenomenon was typically western. In the east there were many people and few cars, so the concept did not catch on as a variation on hotel accommodation and train travel. Hotels and trains sufficed.

Economic circumstances have cause wealth to shift from west to east during the first decade if the twenty-first century. Cars are being made and bought in China in increasing numbers and the motor industry in America is declining. However, it does not seem likely that the Chinese car culture that is growing will spawn a motel industry as it is depicted in western popular culture.

One of the most memorable films that serves to fix the phenomenon in western culture is 'Psycho'. In this film a lunatic murders a beautiful girl whilst she is having a shower in her room. Most English speakers know this film and have the notion of a motel fixed in the consciousness from it. However, many other films include scenes and sequences of motels because they are such indelible aspects of popular culture

Economic influences have impacted on car culture in recent times. Cars have been identified as the culprits in carbon emissions spoiling the planet. Road engineering has also been influential and the range of cars has been so increased that motels are not now as common as they once were.

Many people used to prefer motels to hotels and are disappointed now to have difficulty in finding the kinds of place that they once enjoyed. The simplicity of driving into a place where one could sleep near to one's conveyance is not to be found in hotels. The sort of anonymity and privacy that some people appreciated seems to have vanished from the travel scene.

The car industry has undergone many changes in recent times as the problem of carbon emissions has been linked to the motor vehicle industry. Cars are changing in fundamental ways and this may have implications for motels in the future. It is unlikely that the iconic establishments of the 1960s will be reborn as they were, but perhaps they will enjoy some sort of resuscitation.
