Movie Reviews: Are They Authentic Anymore?

We have all read movie reviews. They make an impact on the way we watch a movie in the theater. We accept it or not, the movie review that we read has a distinct effect on our mind. It gives you a preconceived set of ideas that you take to the movie hall with you. But those days have changed since. The critics you could trust are rarely around. Now there are no shortages of critics who pack in celebrity gossip, passing them off as reviews. These critics make their writing peppy to grab eyeballs and keep the readers interested. As a consequence, they generally end up giving you trivia that you would generally find in the celeb gossip magazines.

Movie reviews have morphed to become something that it was not when it started off. There is hardly any critical evaluation of the film. More often than not, the critic is treated to a lavish affair at the premiere of a film. The critic is supplied with celebrity gossip updates about the leading actors of the movie. The updates tempt the critic to pack them in the review to pull up the readability factor. The celeb gossip elements in the movie review make the whole experience something of a joyride, as opposed to the somber tones of the reviews that we were used to reading.

Movie reviews changed their tack since critics figured out that readers want something more from the review: they want behind-the-scenes action. That is where the liberal doze of celebrity gossip to keep them interested. Readers want to know if there were sparks flying between the lead pair of the movie. They want to know if the got along well with the other members of the cast and crew. They want to know if any of the actors got yelled at by the director! These celeb gossip stories, when sprinkled on the review, make it a more palatable option. The critic can only cater to the needs of the readership to make his voice heard.

Celebrities use the movie reviews to project themselves as well. They speak exclusively to many of the celebrity gossip portals, voicing their opinion about the movie. The celeb gossip magazines feel delighted in getting these exclusive stories which boost their sales or get them more traffic. As a gesture, the entertainment news critic keeps the review toned down and generally praises the actor who spoke exclusively. It’s a sort of symbiosis that benefits both the reader and the portal.

Movie reviews have a special place in the hearts of the movie lover. It’s as much a part of the movie-watching experience. Critics need to realize that celebrity gossip has a different place of its own. Merging the two together will only make the serious readers give up hope and look at the reviews as nothing more than celeb gossip. That will be a very unfortunate and premature death of a tradition that is as ancient and profound as the art of filmmaking.
