Moving From Past To Present With Medical Scrubs

Surgeries have been practiced since ancient civilization. As barbaric as the procedures were, they often were able to save a persons life if they survived the surgery. What was not known, was that without the use of medical scrubs cross contamination of bacteria could cause infections so severe it caused the patients demise and sometimes a physicians illness.

We also note, throughout history, that procedures were performed with the surgeon and assistants wearing nothing but the clothes they wore for the day. Bodily fluids would cause of numerous stains, so the wearing of aprons came into use. After a time it became known that the spread of bacteria to the patient played a major role in recovery, so specialized wear for the surgeon was adapted.

Early scrubs did nothing to make the wearer feel comfortable. They were large and made for one size to fit all. They did afford both patient and doctor the protection desired but at a cost. Sleeves had to be rolled up; waists had to be cinched; and all that extra material was cumbersome to work with. Everything was made of white that caused a startling contrast when blood came into contact with the scrubs. The stark white was the cause of fatigue and eyestrain too.

The surgical suites of today find the doctors and their attendants dressed in green which is a much better color for surgical procedures. Not needed in other area of the hospital, allowed for the many options seen today. In both hospitals and doctors offices, the outfits worn by the professionals are becoming and trendy.

Anti-microbial treated material adds to the safety of the treated patient. It drastically reduces the possibility of the transmission of bacteria. Today the utmost in sterility also fits well and is comfortable.

The cloth used in the production of scrubs does not always require this kind of material. Most are made simply of easy to care for cottons. This is all that is required in many areas of the hospital as well as doctor's offices and clinics. Gone are the baggy pants and coats that only came in one size. Uniforms were now being made to fit the wearer from tall to petite for the feminine gender with the necessary alterations for the male frame.

Scrubs can now be found in most stores where they used to ordered through specialty shops. They come in every imaginable color with tops that burst with prints and designs. The frightened child is now met with an array of cartoon characters that they know and enjoy. Hospital personnel themselves are becoming a walking fashion statement that most people enjoy seeing. Gone are the standard vee necks being replaced with square or fitted necklines for the ladies and even the vee neck for men has an added insert.

The stark white that reminded one of what could be a painful procedure is gone. The medical scrubs of today have done a lot to reduce the tension of being in the presence of a doctor or nurse. Personality now shines through in the hospital setting while allowing the professional to wear their uniform outside their work surroundings.
