Moving Office During A Downsize

One would have to be a masochist to enjoy moving an office – at first it may seem exciting but the amount of hassles that it can cause begin to quickly mount up. Sadly sometimes it can be a chore, especially if one didn’t really want to move in the first place.

Downsizing from one company location to another is one example of this type of unwanted move. It’s sadly something that a lot of businesses recently have had to do, after the pain of making many of their staff redundant. This type of office removal has its own issues. First of all, motivation – we’re usually not desperate to move to another office that is not as good as our previous one, and it is hard to make some employees understand that is not really a choice, it is a requirement. If the company is moving a significant distance, then there are going to be a number of disgruntled employees.

One thing that should be done is to try to give the remaining employees as much help in the move as possible if they have to move home. This does not have to mean personally going round to their house and helping them lug boxes, but you could approach the same removal company who will handle the office move and see if they are willing to give discounts to the employees. You could consider paying for some or all of the employees’ removal costs yourself, but it is a tricky business for a company that is clearly going through harder times financially.

You are going to want to minimize disruption to business as much as possible in any company premises move. The ideal situation would see employees boxing up their personal belongings on a Friday, and finding a nearly identical setting waiting for them at the new premises on Monday. This is a possibility, if one chooses a good office removal company and plans significantly well for the move.

You could take this time to implement changes in the office environment, but don’t overdo it. If you can introduce some new features that will be instantly liked by the staff such as a better coffee machine, great, but try to minimize any new draconian working rules. You should be able to make the moving of the company appear to the employees as the start of the phoenix rising from the ashes, and that the worst times are behind them.
