Mozy Discontinues Its Unlimited Storage Offer

Mozy sends shock waves through the online backup world as it discontinues its unlimited storage offer. A strategy it developed to compete heavily in the online backu world, since it launched just 5 years ago.

Mozy cited that the reason for such moves was due to the pressure of faster internet connectivity and high definition media files which have grown exponentially, something Mozy didn't anticipate when it came up with the unlimited plan 5 years ago.

The news will come as a sigh of relief for smaller online backup providers who feel that they were struggling to compete with the storage giant by having to match Mozy's impressive tariffs. One of the reasons Mozy was able to offer such competitive services was down to heavy investment from it's previous owner EMC.

Current Mozy subscribers who have already paid for their unlimited subscriptions will continue to benefit from these deals, until their subscription expires, where the users will be transferred onto the new price plan, currently $5.99 for 50GB of storage space. New users will obviously sign up straight onto the new plan.

For many years Mozy has set the benchmark for other companies to "up their game", trying to compete by playing catch up with Mozy, companies like LiveDrive and Keepit still currently offer unlimited storage space, and it's unknown whether these companies will continue to offer these packages, or whether they will drop their plans too.

The hidden secret of the industry was that unlimited storage space was a hidden secret since most domestic computer users simply were not capable of uploading large amounts of data due to slow internet speeds. This is partly the reason why companies could promise unlimited storage for home users, but charged a tiered fee for business users who typically had much faster internet speeds.

What's uncertain is whether Mozy's user base would shrink as a result of these changes, or if the power users will begin to prioritise what data they decide to upload.
