Mulling Over Who Invented Chewing Gum

Many an invention tends to have historical origins in the Greek and Mayan periods as they were considered intellectuals of their time. Although they did not have mint or berry-flavored pellets in convenient packaging, they can certainly be accorded acknowledgements as the ones who invented chewing gum in its early stage. As choices in edible tree sap evolved from one genus to another, natives of the North American continents introduced their habitual chews to settlers as a probable gesture of sharing one’s culture and customs.

As time moved along, the opportunity arose to attach a commercial value to this elastic confection. Blending some basic flavors into the batches of sap, this triggered a greater demand for the improved product. Patents started adding up as each inventor wanted to claim the lime light of being the officially recognized inventor. A high-ranking official of the Mexican army was later acknowledged as the character who introduced chicle to Thomas Adams. Although Adams initially toyed around with the rubbery substance for more practical purposes, all came to no avail until he popped a piece of the gum into his mouth. As the saying goes, the rest is history as he went on to open the world’s first factory in manufacturing this elastic confection.

Looking back at the annals of history, it is probably a grey area to specifically point out who invented chewing gum. Since many had their fingers in the sticky substance, it may be fairer to acknowledge each for their contribution. The confection itself has gone through many cycles of gum evolution and grown into a multi-million dollar industry. The humble gum has certainly advanced leaps and bounds from edible tree sap to a kaleidoscope of flavors and colors packaged as sticks, pellets and gumballs. Somewhere along the journey, another bright individual took a left turn at the intersection and probably spearheaded the bubble gum industry. That is a story for another day.
