Along with hyped-up media accounts, Dr. Paolo Zamboni claimed that the disease could be successfully treated by unblocking veins in the brain.

The claims have now raised questions across the globe about how scientists use the media to portray medical research. The response from patients has been so intense that offices across Canada say that regular work often grinds to a halt as eager patients demand more information and immediate treatment.
