My Do-it-yourself House Renovation Project

I have recently discovered another economic crisis’ statistic as I was losing two days a week off my normal working hours. At first, I was quite depressed, however I considered my options and decided to ride out the storm and hold on the search for another job. This is because I considered the extra cost of searching. Using public transport is expensive and postage of CVs would not be fruitful enough to warrant the expense. So what where my options? How could I use the two days a week to their full potential? And how could my household benefit from this situation.

After careful consideration and many cups of tea, it came to me! I would use my do-it-yourself skills and renovate my home. I sat and wrote a list of what needed to be done around the house. The list grew and grew until I had a thorough list that now needed to be split and categorised into separate sections in order of urgency. The new categorised lists started to attract my attention. I had not realised how much the family home had suffered from a lack of investment. I thought how much I spent over the years on my car. Because I drive it into work every day if it needed a service or a tire then it got it straight away - no questions asked.

The house however seemed to not have enjoyed the same luxury. It has suffered from neglect over the last few years. Small jobs have now turned into large jobs and all because they were put off until another day. This is of course false economy and I would advise every house owner not to do what I have done, make those repairs as and when they are needed. If you do not possess do-it-yourself skills then have a tradesman come and carry out the work. Leaving the work will only result in a larger more expensive repair.

For example, a simple job that I have always left was the kitchen sink, it used to leak down the back of the draining board. The washer on the tap leaked and water ran down the back. It was out of sight out of mind situation and only came to me when I filled the kettle. Now a quick half hour of do-it-yourself job would have had the inexpensive repair done. Now though it was a major job. I need to remove the kitchen sink and explore the extent of the damage to the wall. The floor seems soft so will probably require replacing. This all has a knock on effect. The laminate flooring has expanded and is no longer flat on the floor. The kitchen sink unit has burst open and the interior shelf has collapsed all due to water damage.

All this from a small insignificant leak. Now I would have to replace it all at a great expense at least I can save money by doing it myself and keep busy at the same time.
