Myopia And Laser Eye Surgery

Myopia is also known as the nearsightedness which is among the most common refractive errors. It is the defect in the eye which does not affect the vision of the nearby objects but causes the distant objects to be blurry. Myopia may cause the headaches with eyestrain because of the continuous squinting needed to recognize the distant objects.

Myopia occurs in a person having a curved cornea or the eyes are very long from front to the rear. In this defect the light rays bent too much and forms the image in front of the retina instead of on the retina. The blurriness in the vision is referred as the refractive error that is caused by improper shape of cornea, eyeball or lens. Myopia can be caused if the refractive power of an eye is very large in which the cornea is very thick or even if the eye is long.

The laser surgery vaporizes the corneal tissue making it really thin. This surgery reduces the refractive power of eye and the image can be focused on the retina by removing a particular amount of the cornea tissue that ultimately restores the vision.
LASIK is laser eye surgery which permanently changes shape of the clear skin on the front of the eye called as cornea so that it improves the vision and reduce the person's dependency on the eye glasses or the contact lenses. This ultraviolet laser surgery removes the cornea to correct the vision.

Few things to examine before the operation are the curve of the cornea, the position and size of the pupil, the shape of the eyes and the thickness of the cornea that ensures that enough cornea tissue is left after the surgery.

During the laser surgery a specific knife called microkeratome is used for cutting a hinged flap of the corneal tissue out of the outer layer of eyeball which is then lifted out of the way and then the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped with a special laser. Then the flap is replaced and no stitches are required. The eye shield or a patch is placed over the eye so as to protect the flap and to prevent rubbing or any pressure on eye until it is properly healed.

The person considering the laser surgery should be of minimum 18 years of age. A pregnant or breastfeeding lady should not undergo this surgery. The person using drugs like Accutane and oral prednisone are recommended not to undergo this surgery. The problems like swelling and itching gets away with time.
