Myths About Acne
1. Myth: Acne is a contagious disease. This is most definitely false. For a disease to be considered contagious, an agent that carries the disease is required, and there also needs to be a way of passing the disease from one person to another. Many people assume that bacteria, which is not the cause of acne, but merely part of the symptoms, is responsible for causing acne and that acne is therefore contagious. This is not the case. In fact, even if the bacteria came into contact with another person, it would not cause acne. 2. Myth: Only people who are dirty get acne. False. Acne is caused by the pores of the skin being clocked by skin cells, and other entirely biological reasons. Dirt has nothing to do with causing acne, and in actual fact, scrubbing the skin too much and too hard can only worsen the condition. 3. Myth: Sweating will clean out your pores. This too is false. Our bodies actually have two types of pores – oil pores and sweat pores. Thus, when a person perspires, the water is expelled from pores that are not blocked with oil and thus did not need cleaning in the first place. Also, even if the perspiration should reach an oil-blocked pore, it would just cause the blockage to worsen as sweat is basically just water. 4. Myth: You will outgrow acne False. Acne has the potential to occur in people of all ages, from infants to adults. It is not just a “teenage” condition. It is simply possible that acne will worsen in the teenaged/puberty years due to increased hormonal activity. 5. Myth: Lots of sunshine will help your acne Another false idea, often believed. In fact, while some exposure to the sun can help the skin dry out excessive oils, and also kills the bacteria, this is only temporary. Over-exposure t the sun can cause the condition to worsen as the sun’s rays can stimulate the skin’s production of oils, and also increases the retention of dead skin cells. It is also important to remember the damage that the sun’s UV rays can cause, and the possibility of skin cancer. 6. Myth: Stress can cause acne Contrary to popular belief, this too, is false. Medical experts have disagreed over the role of stress in acne for many years. Studies done recently, although the results are not yet conclusive, indicate that while stress can cause a pre-existing acne condition to worsen, it does not however, cause the initial acne to form.
