Nasa’s New Bring Up Of Swim Wear

Michael Phelps is now a legend at age 24 upon breaking his own record of the most athlete to garner most gold in the Olympics. He is a master albeit an institution in his athletic field of swimming. And just as to complement Phelps extraordinary ability in swimming, many private and government funded institutions have expressed making a deal with him – to give him the best swim gear that will sure amplify his ability in the water. Surely, in terms of swimsuits, Phelps always has knowledge on it.

NASA, being known for breaking the impossibilities in physics and other fields of science, made another leap when it introduced a special swimsuit that can boost an athlete’s ability in swimming. Unlike Phelps, Steve Wilkinson, a NASA researcher does not have enough physical ability or enough knowledge about swimming. All he knows is that swimming involves physics and when physics goes into his way he will have a say on it. Just like any moving object, a swimming person experiences a drag – thus realizing Newton’s law on friction. Wilkinson knows how to lower or if not diminish drag when an object moves in air or in water.

Previous studies and athletes’ experiences proved that the clothing they use greatly affects their performances. Even if athletes wear minimal clothes drag can still be experienced. In fact, the more skin is exposed the more drag it could create because our skin is not design with a natural lubricant that like fishes and other aquatic animals. To answer this problem, Wilkinson made a study and invented a type of textile that has the ability to reduce drag. This swim uniform claims to outline the body of the swimmer making his or her muscles to shape like a bullet. The cloth that has been used in this swim wear is also said to be water repellent. This makes this swim suit advantageous than others.

Because of these qualities the men in corporate uniforms at the Olympic committee and other competitors have expressed doubt that other swimmers might unfairly fare with their American counterparts. Speedo, the private company who has the sole manufacturing right over this invention expressed that the suit is just a suit and it will not make a swimmer. It is still the athlete that will have to do work to win. Right now, Speedo’s online uniforms store particularly the page that offers these swimsuits is no longer available over the internet.

"We evaluated the surface roughness effects of nearly 60 fabrics or patterns in one of our small low speed wind tunnels," Wilkinson said in an interview. "We were assessing which fabrics and weaves had the lowest drag. The tests have generally shown the smoother the fabric, the lower the drag."

More than the issues, it is quite interesting to think that we have unleashed knowledge and invented another something we can be proud of. Thanks to the people in NASA.
