The city was named after the Naini Devi temple, which is located at the upper end of the Naini Lake. The temple is devoted to Goddess Naina Devi. Goddess Naina Devi is the manifestation of Goddess Durga and a Shakti form. 'Naini' means 'eyes. Some people feel that it is the place where the eye of Sati (spouse of Shiva) fell and because of this, this place was named 'Nainital'.
