The Nantahala River, located in the Western part of North Carolina offers some very interesting outdoor activities. The most popular outdoor activity on the river is white water rafting. Each and every year thousands of tourists flock to the river to get away from the summer heat. The river itself is about 48 degrees because the water is pulled from the bottom of Nantahala Lake. In essence, the water that you are rafting on has not seen sunshine in years.

There are many parts of the river that make it one of the most enjoyable white water rafting rivers on the East coast. The river begins and ends with Class III rapids, so you start out with a rush and the best is saved for last. Another interesting feature about the Nantahala River is that it is extremely affordable and offers many other activities.

Often touted as one of the being fly fishing rivers East of the Mississippi, the Upper Nantahala is home to some of the best dry fly fishing in North Carolina. What makes it even more exciting to fish on the Nantahala River is the fact that the fish are eager to eat. There are times in the year when it is almost impossible to catch big fish. You will hear many stories of some of the better fly fisherman catching over 40 or 50 fish in one day off dry flies. Make sure to get the your favorite spot early as this river sees a great amount of tourists.
