Often your home telephone bill is much larger because of unexpected fees and services you had not planned on. If you are finding that your home telephone bill is filled with these fees it may be time to hang it up permanently.

If the reception on your cell phone is poor within your home then you might not want to give up your home telephone. Using your cell phone to make long distance calls is generally cheaper than using your home telephone. If you have selected the right cell phone plan then you might want to give up your home phone altogether. However, be aware that you might have a problem if you dial 911. Home telephones provide emergency operators with addresses easily if you can't communicate. Cell phones do not have that same ability. So be aware of that problem if you have a home phone. There are also companies that provide minimal service at a highly discounted rate. Then you can have a home phone that you only use in case of emergency.

Most phone companies provide a basic service but do not advertise that service. The cost of that service ranges between $15 and $20 a month. Contact your local telephone company to see if it is offered in your area. There are also Internet phone services can provide substantial savings but require high speed Internet connection that could be an expensive option. But again you may have 911 problems so investigate that completely.

You may also want to evaluate your cell phone plan. Keep track of how many minutes you use and who you call frequently. How much texting or data you use will assist you in determining if you have the right cell phone plan. Most cell phone companies offer many different plans making it difficult to determine which one might be right for you.

Contact your cell phone company to find out if they have someone who can assist you in reviewing your plan. You may even want to check out the competition to see if they can provide you with better plans. If your contract is about up that is the best time to investigate what plans are available to you. Depending on what your early termination fee is might determine if you want to change plans early.

Saving money on your phone bill is one way to cut your expenses. Don't be afraid to investigate all of your expenses in this same manner. Reducing your expenses and help you reduce your debt by allowing you to put more money towards your debt.
