Never Stand Up On Sit Down Stairlifts! Good And Safe Practices For Correct Use Of Stairlift Mobility Equipment

Standing Stairlifts or as they are branded in the trade! "Perch Standing Stair lifts" allow the user operator to stand on the Stairlift footplate while transported up and down the flight of stairs. If you have a medical condition that does not allow you to sit or bend your knee/s? A standing Stairlift could be the answer to your mobility tribulations.

Perch Stair lifts are also ideal if you have a very narrow staircase! Unlike common sit down Stairlifts there is no projection from the seat therefore standing in the upright straight posture could permit a Stairlift to be installed even on the narrowest of staircases.

One important element is that the user must be able to stand and have a good sense of balance. Standing Stairlifts come with height guards to protect the user from accidently falling and the height guard also acts as a clasp barrier making the user feel safer as they travel on the Stairlift.

The operating direction paddle (Joystick) is generally mounted on the grab handrail height guard by the application of an unsophisticated Velcro attachment and can effortlessly be disconnected so the user can hold the control unit in one hand and self-confidently clench the grab rail with the additional hand.

The operation direction controls are fail safe design! A constant pressure force is essential on the direction switch (Joystick) if the pressure is released for whatever reason the Stairlift will stop moving in the desired direction etc.

Standing Stairlifts are constructed manufacturered to a better-quality specification than the common sit down models! The footplate is designed to withstand the full standing weight / load of the user. Using a normal sit down unit as a stand up model is dangerous and will put extreme demands on the footplate fixings and could even cause the welds to fracture.

Under no circumstances should you use a sit down Stairlift for the same use as a standing perch Stairlift. As well as putting yourself in danger you will also be putting extra lateral force on the stairlift rollers causing them to wear away and possibly to collapse abruptly.
