New Affiliate Marketer - Tips To Help You Succeed

As a new affiliate marketer, you've heard about all the money you can make with affiliate marketing and have probably joined a program or two. They provide everything you need to succeed - products, websites, complete training, even ads and email copy that you can just cut and paste. And, they tell you, all you need to do it just get a few ads out on the Internet, drive traffic to your links, and you are in the money! Can it really be that simple? Well, not quite.

Many promotions online feature homes and cars and dollar bills falling from the sky! It is true that millions are being made and affiliate marketing can generate a substantial income.

Unfortunately, that is not everyone's story and there are many more failures than successes. There is quite a bit more to it than meets the eye. As you embark on your journey to doing business online, pay attention to these tips:

1. Don't be dazzled, i.e. don't believe the hype!
Really, just about every program is going to show you the glitz. If you spend any time online, you have seen lots of earning screen shots. And while those earnings may be true, it does not mean that every affiliate will achieve the same results. Most successful affiliate marketers did not achieve their success overnight. Yes, training can help reduce your learning curve. You need to have realistic expectations. Don't bank on making thousands in your first month. Be prepared to put in lots of time and effort.

2. Don't expect to a free ride. You can't get something for nothing!
If you want to have a business, online or offline, it is going to take work. Time is valuable and you will, at a minimum, invest time. You may also need to invest in advertising and promotion. Offline, you can't just open the doors and wait for customers to flock to a newly opened business. You would advertise to get the word out. Online, it is no different. That is where you will invest time and money in promotion.

3. Don't expect to get anywhere without a road map or a plan!
Many new affiliate marketers start out with just one plan - make money online! But, to succeed you need clear goals that you can measure. You need to set goals as to how much you want to make and when. Set benchmarks that you can measure your progress against. What steps will it take for you to achieve those goals? What methods of promotion can help you reach the number you have in mind? You want to be realistic and set goals that are within your budget, your reach and that are attainable. You want to line up specific actions that will help you get there...one rung at a time.

4. Don't use the generic affiliate link provided by the program!
This is often done by new affiliate marketers. Affiliate links are often long and just shout affiliate! Also, every affiliate gets the same website. A better idea is to create a website that has unique content and then place banners or text links that will link to the affiliate program. You can write the content yourself or have someone else write it at a reasonable price. If you don't want to create your own site, at a minimum purchase a domain name that is unique and then use forwarding and masking to send customers to your affiliate page. Once you have your own domain, submit articles to article directories and utilize the resource box to include the link to your site to generate traffic.

5. Stay focused and don't give up!
Focus is important as you may be tempted to join one program after another. Limit yourself and focus on successfully promoting one or two programs, tops. It may take some time and you may face some discouragement, but stick with it! Learn from trial and error. Don't let mistakes discourage you. It is part of the learning process. The best investment you can make is in learning from others who have succeeded. Coaching or mentoring by a successful marketer is worth it's weight in goal. You can read books on marketing to learn from others to reduce both wasted time and money.
