New Fishing Season In Spain

With the opening of several services and resorts, fishing has become one of the latest areas that have witnessed an expansion in tourism. Though this sport isn’t very popular amongst women, this has hooked onto lots of men and children who are seen by the sea or at lakes and rivers.

Geographically, Spain has a widespread coastline and several lakes on the interior, which makes it possible to try both sea as well as fresh water fishing. Unfortunately, since the summer in the south is intense which dries out rivers and lakes, freshwater fishing is not that popular.

The chances to obtain a fishing license are never easy due to the bureaucracy being followed in Spain. One will have to acquire a maritime recreational fishing license to either fish on the shore or to use a small boat. This license can be used all over Spain and can be acquired from the "Delegacion Provincial de la Conserjeria de Agricultura and Pesca".

A boat could always be rented to assist in sea water fishing. Since tuna fishing grounds are in the Straits of Gibraltar, Barbate, Zahare de los Atunes and Conil, this fish is popular in all restaurants in Cadiz province. Other popular catches are frigate mackerel, blue fish, bogue and grouper.

Freshwater fishing is well-liked in rivers, lakes and reservoirs. The usual catch ranges from barbel, carp, pike and trout. A famous fishing reservoir is in Sierra Neveda, which is not far from Costa del Sol. A license is mandatory to fish in fresh water which is available from Medio Ambiente office.
