New Job

You’ve been scouring the classified ads for a job. You’ve been at home for so long, you are ready to go back to work. You’ve done all those things you have promised yourself you would do, once you get the time. Now you had the time, you have done all those things, and you have rested and relaxed all you wanted. The house was yours to do with as you please. But you have experience and knowledge to share out there, and you need to get back into the swing of things, or you will become a hermit.

So you applied for a few jobs. You get invited to interviews, you feel every position you interview suits you to a T and you set your hopes high on getting each job. Only to be disappointed. You dread the phone call: Sorry, but your application was not successful. The first couple of times really hurt, as you have such high aspirations about yourself. You get taken down a notch or two. You stay out of the job hunting game for a while, to lick your wounds. You start to lose faith in yourself and your abilities. You give yourself a little pep talk and tell yourself that you are strong and worthy, you go out and buy yourself a special perfume, Dolce Gabbana, you feel better, because you feel pampered a little.

Then the news come, you get invited to a second interview from a place where you have lost hope of ever be informed if you were successful or not. They took their sweet time in making a decision, you think, but happily prepare for the second interview. By now you take going to the interview in your stride. You do not set your hopes on this job. You tell yourself if you get it, good, if you don’t, also good. There will be others. Like this one and better.

You get up, shower, wash hair and do a little extra effort with your styling and look. The new perfume will act as your boost for the day, whatever the outcome. You finish off your preparations with a strong cup of coffee and two slices of toast, with honey. You need the energy and the caffeine to keep you from going out of your mind slowly.

Like an old hand you drive through the security gates, answer the security guards questions and park on the previous spot, just like you have done on your previous interview, how long ago was it? Head held high, full of confidence, you walk to the office. Unlike the previous time, you are the only one there for the interview. You feel a little nervous and try to conceal it with playing with your cell phone. Popping bubbles to keep the hands and mind busy.

You get called in, and there are more people in the room that a small room could possibly comfortably accommodate! You try to remember all the names of all the people you get introduced to. You smilingly answer their questions with confidence, all the while thinking, ah well, if it happens, it happens.

After the interview, they ask you to wait outside a while. The while turns to 5 minutes, but this time you don’t mess around with your cell phone. Can they just get over it and let you know already?

Out comes the Manager, thank you for your time, when can you start? WOW! You want to burst out in tears, and hug him all at the same time. Casually you answer, when do you want me to start? You agree to a date and you leave.

On your way to the car, you are sure it was the new perfume that did the trick!
