New Modesto Store In Step With Runners

Healthy feet will find a happy home at the new ONTHERUN store in Modesto's McHenry Village.

The specialty store for runners opened this week from father- and-son owners Steve and Bryan Harden. The men have more than30 years of combined experience in retail and sporting goods.

The store stocks an assortment of athletic shoes, gear, accessories, nutritional supplements and technological products.

General Manager Bryan Harden said opening the shop has been a dream of his father's for some time. The senior Harden started running in 2000, after he was diagnosed with leukemia. He has been cancer-free for11 years but kept up the sport, as did Bryan Harden.

Together, they want to bring their experience and expertise to the running community.

"My dad has wanted to get into the running community and help out," said Bryan Harden. "We definitely wanted to fill a niche in this market. Legitimately, we have anything you need to go out and run, in all sorts of Central Valley weather."

They also help runners find the perfect fit with their exclusive "individual fit system." They use video footage from an in-store treadmill that shows gait, stance and other specifics, as well as a separate pressure pad.

"It definitely helps narrow down a lot of choices," Bryan Harden said. "In running, there are a ton of choices."

The proper fit is essential for runners — beginning and otherwise — to help prevent injury and increase performance.

The store stocks60 styles of men's running shoes and 55 for women. It carriesfive major brands: Mizuno, Brooks, Saucony, New Balance and Asics.

The 2,800-square-foot space has about10 part-time employees besides Harden and his father. The Hardens did extensive remodeling of the spot, next to Village Health Foods.

They're also planning to hold seminars and workshops for running club members.

Elsewhere around the Business Beat:

Modesto's Pure Joy Bakery and The Lunch Pail have closed because of the economy.

Pure Joy Pie Co. owner Bryan Ehrenholm closed the bakery, cafe and catering business Oct. 22.

In a note posted on The Lunch Pail Web site, he wrote, "We am sorry to announce the closing of Pure Joy Bakery and The Lunch Pail. As you know, we are living in extraordinary times and are unable to financially keep this joyous operation afloat."

He also posted on the bakery's Facebook page, saying, "There are no plans to continue any services, including farmers markets or catering. We will enjoy the holidays with our families and see what the new year brings."

And, finally, get into the spirit of the season this weekend at the first-ever holiday open house in the Village at Vintage Faire.

Vintage Faire Mall will have a weekend's worth of activities, including the Holiday Express Train, ice skating, entertainment, Santa's arrival and a holiday-themed marketplace.
