New Mom’s Survival Guide
1) Make sure that you find other new moms to consult with. If you only commiserate together you will feel better knowing that you are not alone. Ask questions openly and take everyone’s experience into consideration. Make sure that you keep an open mind and consider that what works for someone else’s child may or may not be best for yours. Listen carefully to advice. It doesn’t mean that you have to take it, but at least you will have considered several options before making your final decision. 2) Find ways to have fun with your baby. Many moms want to stay home and treasure the time that they have with their child. However, it can be very boring at times and many mothers miss the independence that they once had. Arrange play dates, go to music classes, sing silly songs and develop little routines that keep the both of you occupied. 3) Make sure that you find a little time each week or month to get out and be your old self. Your family deserves to have the “you” that they know and love. Try not to focus 100% of your time and energy on parenting. It can be stressful and taxing, so you need to have a little escape that is just meant for you to be you. Nurture the relationships that you have with friends and family. It will pay off in the end and help you to keep your spirits up. 4) Do things that will make your life easier each day. Find a better spot to keep the diapers so you’re not constantly trekking across the house to the nursery every time you need something. Keep hampers around the house where you might need them. Create a laundry and feeding routine so that you and your baby will have an idea of what to expect. Stay as organized as possible. Keep the baby’s clothing separated in little baskets, hanging on infant hangers, baby hangers, or children’s hangers so that they don’t get lost or mangled. Purchase things that you may need, like fever reducers, ointment, and a thermometer. Being prepared will help you to feel better and reduce the number of trips you’ll make to the store in the middle of the night.
