New Yorkers Should Embrace Their Junk Yards To Save The Environment

Not that long ago, most people in the state of New York were not all that thrilled to see a new junk yard come to town. Today that scenario is changing as auto recyclers as they are now called are adopting new strategies, which are endearing them to the public. Although auto recyclers have always been a place to go when a part was hard to find or too expensive to buy from a dealership, today more and more people are going to a junk yard first rather than second. The reasons the trend is become a first choice rather than a last resort are many. The first of these does still have to do with the fact that used parts are just cheaper; however, these cheaper parts are also making better sense as a viable alternative to buying a new one.

In the mid to late part of the twentieth century, a disposable culture was developing across the United States. This ideology seemed to seep into every facet of life in this country. Disposable goods were everywhere from diapers to plates and forks, convenience over frugality was the name of the game. Sometime around the end of the twentieth century however that philosophy began to catch up with many Americans as it was realized that out of sight did not mean gone forever. Advertisements showing how long it took plastics and Styrofoam to decompose abounded and Americans began to realize that they were using the land around them for a trash dump. Today most realize the importance of recycling not just plastics but other things as well. That’s were auto recyclers come in. By providing up to date facilities that contain the latest technologies on hazardous waste recovery and then removing and inventorying all working parts of salvage vehicles, these modern salvage yards are doing their part to ensure that all the hazardous chemicals that are contained in vehicles do not find their way into our precious ground water and air. Auto recyclers work closely with local and federal environmental agencies to ensure that all those chemicals are safely recovered and properly disposed of.

Also by removing all working parts from vehicles and offering them back for resale, the citizens of New York have the opportunity to not only save some money on vehicle repairs but choosing to buy used parts means that electricity, natural resources and energy are conserved because it lessens the need for new parts. Once a vehicle has been stripped of both waste and useable parts, the metal shell is sent to a crusher or shredder where the metal it contains is then reprocessed to use again in the production of more automobiles or other things. It has been estimated that since 1997, more than 13 million new cars have been produced just from the metal that has been recycled from inoperable automobiles. Now that is something that everyone in the state of New York should be able to appreciate.
