Newberry College Basketball 2011-12

Newberry, South Carolina, an historic town in the midlands region of the state, is home to Newberry College. Just over 1,000 students are enrolled in the small, liberal arts college. The school’s 15 sports teams include men’s and women’s basketball. The teams play at the NCAA Division II level in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC). The Newberry Wolves are one of ten schools competing in the conference. Other teams in the South Atlantic Conference are Anderson University (SC), Brevard College, Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Lincoln Memorial University, Mars Hill College, Tusculum College, and Wingate University.

With a little over one month to go in the regular season, the Newberry women’s basketball team is having an excellent season. They should be in good shape for the SAC Tournament. They are the current conference leader, with a 5-1 conference record. Their overall season record is currently 10-4. The Newberry women won back to back SAC Championships in 2006-07. Last year the women advanced to the SAC Tournament semi-finals, where they lost to Tusculum.

The men’s team has a current record of 8-5, and they are 3-3 in conference play. Anderson University is currently leading the conference. In last year’s SAC Tournament, the Newberry men made it as far as the quarter final round, where they were knocked out by the Tusculum men. The next home game for the Newberry men’s basketball team will be January 25 against conference rival Brevard. This will be followed by three more games at home. They will play Tusculum, another conference team, on January 28. On January 29 they will play Hiwassee in a non-conference match up. On February 1 Mars Hill College, another conference rival, comes to Newberry. Their last home game will be on February 25 against Catawba.

The women’s basketball team has a similar schedule. They will play Brevard at home on January 25, Tusculum on January 28, and Mars Hill on February 1. Their last home game is also against Catawba on February 25. All of these games are conference games. The South Atlantic Conference Tournament begins on February 29 for the men’s and women’s teams.
The Newberry Wolves play their home games in Eleazer Arena, which seats 1,600 fans. The arena is also the venue for Newberry volleyball games and wrestling matches. The college is located at 2100 College Street in Newberry. Eleazer Arena is part of the Physical Education Complex on Luther Street. Single game tickets for Newberry basketball games are $5.
