Newborn Baby Layette - Deciding What You Need For Your Baby

Trying to determine what you need for your new baby's clothing and layette can be a challenging job to new mothers to be. It seems like everyone you know will want to offer their opinion and advise on what you should and shouldn't have. The season of the year it is will also play an important part in what you will need. You won't need a swimsuit if your baby is a Winter baby. If you are unsure of the sex of your baby, purchasing items in neutral colors is a very good idea as well.


For your baby's layette, the list below is a good start:

* Baby Diapers - if you are using cloth diapers, you'll need about 4 dozen or 48. If you are using disposable diapers, 350 should be fine.

* Cotton mittens for sharp fingernails

* Burping Cloths - about 12 so you can always have clean ones on hand.

* Receiving Blankets - eight to ten

* Baby Socks or Baby Booties - eight to 10 pair

* Bodysuits - seven to nine Onesies type body suits

* Tee Shirts - 5 to 6 with side snaps for ease

* Baby Gowns or Sleepers - two to three that have the drawstring at the bottom

* 2-3 cotton baby hats

* Tops or Shirts - 2 to 3

* Bottoms or Pants - two to three pair

* One Piece Outfits - two to three

* Baby Bibs - four to six bibs

* Remember a homecoming outfit for your newborn

Items to consider for Summer babies:

* 1 Bathing Suit

* Lightweight baby blankets

* A baby bonnet or hat very lightweight

* A jacket that is lighter weight with a hood

Good items for your Winter baby are as follows:

* A snowsuit

* Baby car seat cover to keep weather from your baby.

* Blanket Sleepers - 2 to 3

* Possibly a sweater or 2

* Baby Hat - 1 - 2

* Baby Mittens or gloves

* Baby Blankets

When making plans for your baby's clothing and layette, make sure you purchase baby laundry detergent and fabric softener to gently wash your baby's clothing. It's a good idea to make sure everything is washed before your new baby arrives to remove any irritants that may have been at the store and were unknown to you or the store.
