Though for decades he’s been an imposing persona in the music world—many photographs of him portray Nick Cave as a dark, angry wildman—his writing has lent itself well to cinema. More often than not, Cave’s songs explore specific characters, with the lyrics becoming short stories filled with dreadful and gruesome imagery—as well as some that’s tender and moving. And though he explored acting in side projects and with a well-known (but hard to find) film called “Ghosts…Of the Civil Dead,” he hasn’t made the jump to cinema as quickly as anyone would imagine.

Though his acting roles are still few and far in between, his major jump to film appeared in 2005 with “The Proposition,” an Aussie western that takes place in the outback in the 19th century. Borrowing heavily from Australia’s legacy as a prison colony, the film does indeed leave the country looking like a lawless moonscape, with small outposts of civilization struggling to tame everything around it. The most striking example of this dichotomy in the film is when the camera floats over the garden of a prominent policeman, revealing a florid space of green and color amidst the drab, red-brown of the outback. It’s a typical English garden, reflecting the English mentality of civilization: Bend the wild to your will.

This dynamic tugs back and forth throughout the story, as the ne’er do wells at its center flee the law and the law pursues, bent on trapping and twisting them. It’s a wonderful story, one that plays off the clichés of the old American westerns and lends itself color and detail from Australia’s past. This being a story rising from the ink of Nick Cave, it’s stark and often times brutal. The scene that introduces the main character involves a whorehouse that looks more like an abandoned tool shed, walled in corrugated metal. You can almost feel how hot the air is watching the film.

It received numerous accolades for both its story and the brilliant soundtrack that Cave provided. While fans while keep their fingers crossed that he’ll produce more such work in the future, they can see him on stage by purchasing Nick Cave tickets.
