No, Not The Critics!
But of course I can criticize all I want; the world doesn't change a bit. So as a social critic I really don't see myself as progressive or as some sort of sage. It's only a character defect in reality. Why do we need art critics? I harbor a lot of criticism toward movie critics for example. Before a movie, my mother always checks out the reviews and oddly enough she always seems to side with the critic. One thing you should never do I believe is read film critiques. You're almost certain to be biased. However, occasionally I'll really hate a film but read reviews later and get a new perspective on it. Roger Ebert is good for that; he likes to find the good things in a film. I've never read the play, but I love the title of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." That neatly sums up the overwhelming majority of the nitpicking we do. Not only do people question and criticize you on the way you live your life and your career choices (that is extremely annoying by the way), they may even criticize you for something as mundane as choosing a soft-bristle toothbrush over a hard one.
