Northeast Alabama’s State Parks
DeSoto State Park, located atop Lookout Mountain, is one of the state’s most popular state parks. The park has more than twenty miles of trails and a number of picturesque waterfalls. The Little River runs through the park, and fishing is allowed above the dam at DeSoto Falls. Other park amenities include picnic areas, a playground, nature center, swimming pool, and campgrounds. The Mountain Inn Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. DeSoto State Park is located eight miles north of Fort Payne. Buck’s Pocket State Park is located in a secluded pocket canyon above Lake Guntersville. The park’s twenty miles of trails afford hikers some magnificent views. The park’s featured trail is Point Rock Trail, and Point Rock is a favorite spot for rappelling. Secluded Morgan’s Cove on Lake Guntersville is also part of the park. This area has a boat ramp and a fishing dock. The park has picnic and camping areas as well as six miles of horse trails. Buck’s Pocket State Park is located on the east side of Lake Guntersville near the town of Grove Oak. Lake Guntersville State Park is a 5,600 acre park located on one of the Southeast’s best bass fishing lakes. There is a public boat ramp, and the park has rental boats. Golfers will enjoy the park’s 18-hole championship course. There is a beach area for swimming, a campground, and 36 miles of multi-use trails. The park’s Pinecrest Restaurant serves meals. Visitors to the park are often able to spot eagles during the winter months. Lake Guntersville State Park is located near Guntersville, Alabama. The highlight of any visit to Cathedral Caverns State Park is a guided tour of the beautiful cavern. Once inside the cave’s massive entrance, visitors will see Big Rock Canyon, the Frozen Waterfall, Stalagmite Forest, and “Goliath”, a giant stalagmite. Visitors may also do gemstone mining in the park. Cathedral Caverns State Park is located twenty miles southwest of Scottsboro. Monte Sano State Park is located just east of Huntsville atop Monte Sano Mountain. Hiking trails in the park afford beautiful views of the Tennessee River Valley. One of the parks special features is the Von Braun Astronomical Society’s Planetarium, which is open every Saturday evening. Visitors may view the night sky through telescopes. Other park amenities include picnic areas, a campground, and a playground. All of these state parks are great places to visit at any time of the year.
