Nursing Through Distance Learning

Nursing is a growing field, with a huge range of specializations. As more students are applying for a limited number of spaces in nursing programs, alternative education routes are becoming more popular. Earning a nursing degree is now possible through a variety of distance learning programs as well as at community colleges and at universities.

Online learning programs are advantageous for many people, particularly those who would have to relocate to go to school, and would find that a hardship due to family commitments or to the higher cost of living incurred by moving. Distance learning is also an alternative for students who would like to specialize and need specific courses not offered at their school in order to do, as well as for those with a degree who are need to upgrade their degree with only a few classes.

In most cases distance learning is just that, education obtained through correspondence or over the internet, at a distance. Students and instructor don’t meet in person. While this works for classes where there is a lot of reading and assignments that are strictly on paper, it is more challenging for practical classes and labs, where one might need to learn skills such as taking a pulse or giving an injection. Some programs use a system whereby students do much of their work online, but do gather on a semi-regular to regular basis at a central location to work on the hands-on skills they need.

Online nursing schools use technological tools like online or taped materials and videos, and teleconferencing to teach students. Assignments are also for the most part completed and submitted online, though a few places incorporate correspondence through the postal system. Practicums and internships are often set up in local hospitals or health units, though sometimes they are further from the student’s home.

One problem that may occur for nursing students who use online learning can be isolation. As nursing is a practical field, and students in colleges often study in cohorts, distance learners may feel that lack. It is important to connect with others studying the same program as you, particularly as you may well be working together in practicums. Another challenge can be the self-discipline and organization required to study independently, so it is important to be sure that you are able to manage those aspects of distance learning.
