Nyepi Day In Bali

Nyepi the day of Silence on the Hindu calender that commemorates the New Year for the Saka in Bali, falls on 5th March this year so if you are in Bali on this date this is what you should expect:

• If you are a tourist at this time you are expected to stay in your Bali Hotel or Villa

• Hotels have an agreement with the community that daily operations can continue for the day but be sure that the guests are not to go out side the hotel grounds.

• For the Community in general on Nyepi day there is to be no cooking, no lights used, no entertainment, and you must stay in doors until 6am the following day.

• The Airport is closed

The Night before the Nyepi Day there are parades in the villages with Scary Demonic statues with big teeth and large eyes called the Ogoh Ogoh which are burnt later in the evening in the ritual Ngrupuk, to be rid of the Demons and Evil spirits from our lives.

Nyepi is all about looking into ourselves, thinking about helping our fellow man, about Values like patience and humility and getting closer to God, the world starts anew after Nyepi Day, the silence on Nyepi Day is to trick the Evil Spirits into thinking Bali is deserted and so they move on.

On the day after Nyepi, known as Ngembak Geni, social activity picks up again quickly as families and friends gather to ask forgiveness from one another, and to perform specific religious rituals, So wherever you happen to be staying on Nyepi Day in Bali this will be a good day to spend indoors, and contemplate how you will spend the next year of your life.
