Obamacare -- The Plan
Prior to any health reform, college grads were told that the cost of staying on their parents' plan after graduation had shot up to $500 a month. Now, young adults are able to remain on their parents insurance at the same rate until joining the work force or turning 26. This eliminated what was an over-the-top gap in coverage. Every year small business owners saw an increase in premiums and searched for more affordable alternatives. Even with them paying half the premiums, they had employees who did not have the means to purchase health insurance and their families went without. These wage earners felt like they were constantly living on the edge -- hoping that neither they nor their children would face an illness or injury that could bankrupt them. Today, the small business tax credit in the Affordable Care Act will help continue to ensure their employees can get the coverage they need. Previously, when heads of household lost their jobs they also lost health coverage, and had to pay out of pocket if their child became ill or required surgery. Because insurance companies can no longer deny coverage to children on the basis of pre-existing conditions, the offspring of wage earners are now guaranteed insurance. If not for proper insurance, parents never would have the healthcare now available. After a century of struggle and a year of debate, to be able to take your children to the doctor without worrying about falling deeper into debt, is an important step in moving this country forward.
