1. 3,000 Miles or 3 Months

While this may be solid advice for people with older model vehicles, anyone driving a car manufactured within the past ten to fifteen years should first consult their owner's manual. Most drivers will be surprised by the manufacturer's suggestions which are generally anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 miles. This can save you hundreds of dollars over the years and spare you from yet another trip to the lube shop.

2. Dark Fluid

Is it supposed to be that color? Some people will tell you that if your fluid is black that you need an oil change. However, a dark color just means that it's working. As the fluid goes through the engine it cleans it, picking up gunk and other debris, which in turn will cause the discoloration. Some also already come pre-packed with soot particles that are harmless but do cause a blackening. Color and scent cannot determine when you need to bring your car in. Remember that it isn't as cheap as just buying some fresh fluid from the auto shop. You'll also need to buy a new filter and pay to dispose of the old fluid. Then there is the time investment as well as the risk of some nasty stains on your clothing. In the end, you might save five bucks or nothing at all. It's better to keep an eye out for coupons and jump on those that offer additional complimentary services such as a car wash or interior vacuum.
