Oil Containment Booms: Protecting Water From Oil Impurities

Oil spills are unavoidable. Oil rigs pump and collect large amounts of oil, or ships carrying large amounts of oil products and create trails of diesel from the ships’ engines, can be found on water surfaces. No matter how protected or sealed the oil drums are, there is still a chance that leaks and spills can occur, thus contaminating bodies of water such as rivers, oceans, seas and shores.

If these bodies of water become contaminated by oil or other toxic chemicals, the destruction of marine life is most likely to happen. If these oil spills were not cleaned up, the world would probably face its hardest crisis ever. Since three quarters of the earth is made up of water, humans and almost all living things depend very much on it. Fish die from the oil spill, as well as the birds that become poisoned from eating the fish. These birds also suffer when the oil sticks to their wings, preventing them from flying. Many cities around the world - such as New York, Detroit, Ontario and more - are also near bodies of water. This can be compounded by the fact that the effects of an oil spill last for a very long time.

One way to protect the bodies of water from the toxic effects of oil spills is the use of oil containment booms. These oil containment booms prevent the oil spills from spreading further onto the water’s surface. Oil is trapped within the barricade of these booms, allowing workers to readily clean up oil spills through the use of spill kits and earth-friendly absorbents. The method of using these booms proves to be far easier than randomly just vacuuming up water surfaces for oil spills. Since oil is trapped, it’s easier to clean the water because the spill is controlled and isolated.

Oil containment booms act as barriers for further oil toxicity. Marine life in areas away from the spill can be preserved during this process. There would be far less contamination and pollution to the marine creatures and their habitat. The preservation of water sources does not only apply to marine animals such as fishes, but also to human, land animals and the entire ecological system.

If our water systems like wells and dams become contaminated due to industrial companies’ negligence, many people will get sick and suffer the ill-effects of chemical toxicity. Cattle and other livestock animals can also be affected since they freely drink fresh water in springs and ponds. The irrigation system may be polluted, which would result in unhealthy produce or lesser produce yields.

Prevent oil spills by containing them first and cleaning them effectively. Oil should not get mixed up with water resources that are ingested by life forms. Oil is energy, but clean, drinkable water is much more important. Oil containment booms are a great help to keep our water surfaces clean. Without water, there will be no life. Protect bodies of water by maintaining it free from impurities that could destroy our earth’s natural habitat.
