Online Dating - The Pros And Cons Of Online Dating

Busy singles can use online personals as an easy way to connect with each other and avoid the bar scene. As with any method of meeting new people, though, there are both pros and cons to using the Internet in your search for love.

Let's look at the 'cons' or drawbacks of online dating, first.

Con #1: People Can and Do Lie

Rest assured that the majority of profiles on any online dating site come from honest people just like you. Sometimes people may 'exaggerate' a little bit on things like weight, but you'll find most people present themselves accurately.

However, there will always be a small percentage of people who are out to scamyou or are simply online to make fun of other people. There is a chance, although quiet a small one, that you could meet up with someone who lied about virtually everything in their profile.

You can avoid this situation if you trust your gut instincts, and take the time to correspond with your matches for at least 2 to 3 weeks before organizing an in-person date.

Con #2: Some Sites Do a Better Job of Matching Than Others

All of the little details you fill in when you create your profile (e.g., weight, income, sexual preference, religion, interests, etc) are used to help match you with other members.

However, a match on a superficial level is not necessarily going to turn into a love connection. In order to tilt the odds in your favor, you should select a reputable match-making site that asks its members to go into deeper detail on issues of compatibility.

These are the two biggest 'cons' to online dating. Now, let's look at the 'pros'.

Pro #1: Great Alternative for Busy People

Online dating is a great alternative to the bars for busy singles. If you don't have time to meet people through offline activities, then Internet dating can offer a very effective solution to your problem.

You have total control over when and where you log-on. It could be 2:00 in the afternoon at work, or 3:00 in the morning at home.

Pro #2: Establish Rapport before the First Date

First dates are usually filled with small talk. This is a necessary part of getting to know someone, but what if you could get the small talk out of the way before you spend the time and money on that first date?

This is exactly what online dating allows you to do. Although you don't want to wait too long before meeting in person, there's nothing wrong with taking a few weeks to correspond with a potential match before you agree to go out.

In the long run, the pros of online dating far outweigh the cons. Most dating sites offer free basic memberships and affordable premium subscriptions, so you really don't have much to lose by giving it a try!
