Psychologists recommend that you do this quickly as long periods of emailing, texting and phone conversations can build up an expectation of a person that they will probably never be able to match up to. You will be disappointed even before you start.

Arrange to meet somewhere centrally located and in a fairly public place, this gives both people a level of comfort. Organise a coffee date for no more than an hour and ideally in the daytime. Most people can tolerate one hour of another person's company and if you just don't click, you have not wasted vast amounts of time or money. If you are bowled over with each other, you can always extend the date or agree to meet again.

Keep the conversation light and upbeat. Try to avoid the obvious 'what a bastard he was' or 'she was a right bitch'. This only shows the uglier side of us humans and this kind of personal information can always be kept for later in the relationship.

There is a show business adage about 'leave them wanting more'. Never is this truer than when meeting people. If you part after an hour but cannot wait to see each other again, you are truly fortunate and privileged.
